learn by what you want to do.

How do you tell whether a symptom points to Taiyang, Shaoyang, Yangming or the three yin? When does a formula apply, and how does it differ from similar ones? Start from your purpose and go to the matching classic or formula pattern.

Master Ni's seven steps of differentiation

  1. 1Exterior or interiorIs the disease in the exterior (Taiyang), the interior (Yangming / three yin), or half exterior half interior (Shaoyang)?
  2. 2Yin or yangFloating, large or wiry pulses are mostly yang patterns; sunken, faint or thin pulses are mostly yin patterns.
  3. 3Cold or heatSweating or not? Aversion to cold or to heat? Watch for true cold with false heat and true heat with false cold.
  4. 4TransmissionWhere might the current pattern go next? Has it already passed to another channel (e.g. Taiyang to Shaoyang after five to seven days, long-standing Taiyin to Shaoyin)?
  5. 5ConstitutionYin deficiency, yang deficiency, phlegm-damp, blood stasis? How does this affect formula choice?
  6. 6Choose the formulaMatch formula to pattern, main and secondary clearly distinguished (this step must be done by a licensed practitioner).
  7. 7Fine-tuneAdjust herbs and doses for accompanying patterns, constitution and severity (this step must be done by a licensed practitioner). Beginners who master the first three steps can handle the study of most common illnesses.
